The Agentic Economy Is Coming, and Blockchain Is The Infrastructure That Will Power It
Away from the hyper capitalism and the endless drive for profitability of companies that have spearheaded the revolution of artificial intelligence, one cannot deny that software has started doing things instead of just helping us do things. Give an AI agent a goal today and it will research, compare options, draft the emails, and in some cases spend the money. Book the flight. Rebalance the portfolio. Chase down a supplier. And once you've watched one agent work, the next thought arrives on its own. What happens when there are millions of them, and they start hiring each other?
This idea has been tagged the agentic economy. Agents, buying data from agents, renting compute from agents, paying other agents to do the parts of a job they can't, with little to no human interventions.
But then... Our entire traditional finanical (TradFi) system was built on the assumption that the entity spending money is a person, or at least a company full of persons. Bank accounts want KYC documents. Card networks want a cardholder. Contracts want trust. This clearly does not fit the permissionless world of agentic economy.
Enter decentralised finance (Defi), or what is left of it - powered by blockchain. Most people have lived with the misconception that blockchain is all about cryptocurrency. Thankfully, this article is about the fusion of this same phenomenon, which is just a bite of the possibilities of blockchain technology. So we will ride on this misconception by establishing that in an agentic economy:
Agents need their own money
What does it take for you to open a bank account in your country? Now, imagine an AI agent opening a bank account. It won't pass the stringent KYC check. If an agent cannot have a bank account, it becomes an an extension of the owner's bank account for every transaction; credit cards, debit cards, loans, etc.
A crypto wallet sidesteps this. A wallet can be created, funded with the appropriate cryptocurrency, and sign transactions within 10 seconds, without anybody's permission required. To rephrase, agents can have their own money.
Payments are in bits
Think about what agents actually buy from each other. A fraction of a cent for one database query, thirty seconds of GPU time, a single demand forecast, market briefs through x402s, status reports from government APIs and so on. Thousands of these a day, most of which are a one time transactions.
Try running that through a card network with its fixed fees, or a bank wire that settles on Thursday. It's laughable. The economics simply don't work below a certain payment size, and agentic commerce lives almost entirely below that size. Fast blockchains and layer-2 networks settle in seconds for almost nothing, at 3 a.m. on a Sunday, between a server in Lagos and one in Talin, and they don't care. That's not a nice feature. For this use case it's the whole ballgame.
Permissionless, no lawyers
Payments are actually the easy part. The hard part is trust. When individuals carry out a transaction, there's a whole invisible scaffolding holding it up: contracts, courts, reputations etc. Agents have none of that. One agent can't sue another. It can't check references or read the other side's body language.
Smart contracts are the workaround. The money sits in escrow on-chain and releases itself when the agreed conditions are verifiably met. Neither side has to trust the other because neither side can cheat. The agreement enforces itself. That lets an agent strike thousands of deals an hour with total strangers, which is exactly what this economy requires and exactly what human trust systems could never support at that speed.
A track record no one can fake
If my agent is about to hire your agent, it wants to know one thing: is your agent any good? On-chain history answers that in a way a website testimonial never could. Every job completed, every contract honoured, every dispute lost, all of it sits on a ledger nobody can quietly edit later. The wallet address becomes a resume that can't lie.
There's an underrated accountability angle here too. When an autonomous agent spends money or commits to something, there's a permanent trail leading back to whoever deployed it and what they authorized it to do. That trail is what will eventually let regulators, insurers, and regular people relax about agents acting on their own. Without it, I doubt this economy gets permission to exist at scale.
Who owns the marketplace matters
Suppose the agentic economy takes off, but it all runs on one company's platform. That company now collects a toll on a massive slice of future economic activity, and it writes the rules, and it can rewrite them. We've watched this movie with app stores and social platforms. We know how it ends.
Blockchains offer the alternative: infrastructure that works like a commons. Nobody owns it, the rules are out in the open, and changing them takes more than a board meeting.
But then... It is not all greens from here. I'd be selling a dangerous dream if I ignore the elephant in the room chain. Blockchains still have throughput ceilings and a user experience that fights you. An agent with a wallet is also an agent that can be robbed, whether by a bug or by someone slipping a malicious instruction into its context. And when an autonomous agent signs a bad deal, who's liable? Courts haven't even started on that one. The safety layer between an AI model and a signing key, the spending caps, the kill switches, the human checkpoints, is being built right now, mostly by trial and error. These are engineering problems and governance problems. Hard problems? Yes. But will they get solved? Yes. However, none of them break the underlying fit between what agents need and what these ledgers provide.
Here's how I've come to think about it. The agents are the vehicle. They'll do the work and make the decisions and create the value. Blockchain is the engine, supplying the things the vehicle can't move without: money agents can hold, settlement at machine speed, trust that doesn't need an institution behind it, identity without paperwork, coordination without a gatekeeper.
Neither one gets there alone. Blockchain spent years as an engine idling in the garage, searching for something worth powering. AI agents are that something. And agents, for all their intelligence, were about to slam into the wall of a financial system that has no room for them. Watching these two lock together is, I'd argue, a bigger story than any single product either field will ship this decade.
